I went to the World Tamil Conference held at Coimbatore recently from June 23rd to 27th,2010. It was a grand mela. There was little doubt in everyone,s mind that this may turn inbto a party function. Fortunately the DMK govt took meticulous care that there should not be any sign of party flags, banners or party men hanging around in the conference area. It is a big surprise that there was no single party banner or flag in the whole of conference area and its vicinity during these days. The CM needs to be applauded and appreciated for this wonderful arrangement and for maintianing the academic environment without any party pollution. This was a nice experience. The foreign Tamil scholars were given more importance. Each foriegner was provided with an escort police man and with an assitant. As they are very well used to Tamiilnadu by their frequent visits, this sudden VIP treatment was little embarassing to themselves. Yet this showed the care the govt showered upon the delgates. More than 1000 papers were presented in 23 halls in these four days.Foreign scholars were very busy in running from one hall to another to listen to the papers of their interest while many Tamil scholars were busy in meeting their old friends and looking for the free distribution of some compliments, books, travel money, and snacks and tea. However it was a very nice and best epxerience for me. I enjoyed it on the whole.
